Shanks are just one of the ways to help determine an old button from a vintage or modern button. Below are examples of old shanks found on glass buttons. SPECIAL NOTE: The 4-way box shank is also found on "modern" glass buttons including moonglows .... coming out of the Czech Republic currently and in the last couple of years.

Snaptogether buttons

Snaptogethers: That is what button collectors call this type of button. This is a two piece snap but I have some that are four different pieces with each piece in a different color. When my kids were young this was their favorite type of modern button to collect. They would take apart 10-15 buttons mix them up and have fun putting them back together.

New to Collecting Buttons ?

Are you new to collecting buttons? Has your brain turned to mush yet? Being a new collector can be daunting ... what is it made of, is it old, yada yada.

I cannot stress enough that if you want to be a true collector of buttons and plan on dishing out big $$ .... spend some of those dollars on learning what you are collecting. One of my biggest pet peeves is sellers on ebay that make their buttons sound so good (with false information) .. that the new collector pays an outrageous price because they do not know any better.

I guess I should feel that if they do not take the time to learn what they are spending money on .. then it's their own fault.. but that is not the case with me. I receive hundreds of e-mails every month from new collectors who say " well in the auction ad it said this" but when I took it to my button club they said "it is not what I purchased".

I could write another book on the subject but here are a few helpful links:
